Here is something that experienced diamond art painters know: sometimes, bigger is better when it comes to the size of your diamond art kit canvas.
This may not be good news for those who are new to the craft. Smaller paintings are cheaper when you are trying diamond painting for the first time.
But it is important to have realistic expectations. If you have tried or are considering a small diamond painting, know that it will not look as detailed or realistic as a larger painting.
THE ART OF DIAMOND PAINTING IS PIXEL ART
Diamond drill size: 2.8 mm. If we made them smaller, they couldn't handle it.

Of course, this means that if you reduce the pattern to a smaller canvas, a single diamond will cover more surface on the pattern.
On a large canvas, the image of an eye can consist of several pixels. When you paint it with diamonds, you could have different colors in the eyes… which means it would look more realistic on a large canvas.
But if you reduce that same image to a small canvas, the eye could be reduced to a single pixel, one diamond and one color. Certainly not as realistic!

As you can see, on a smaller size, many details are lost. You wouldn't see the small stars as individual diamonds. When one color transitions to another in the night sky or in the water, there is less subtlety.
You now understand why it is wise to enlarge your diamond painting if you love designs with a lot of details. We therefore recommend choosing a larger canvas.
